Mr Smiley Marmite, that is one cool suitcase - you will be the envy of all the passengers if Rachel is one of the lucky 100 in this wonderful Sanitarium Marmite Competition. Good luck, Rachel, you deserve it with the fantastic postings that you have presented. I know it hasn't been easy, with all your other commitments ie being a new mother :), but you did it! Well done xo

Dear Marmite Flight Control

Over the last few days, I've been wondering exactly what to say to you to convince you to pick me. Honestly, I've been at a loss for words because there are so many deserving kiwis in this competition. They are the ones that left their family to explore the big world, to look for better opportunity, to find an adventure, all to be left with a feeling of longing and sadness for the home that once was, and always will be...New Zealand.

I always find it so incredibly refreshing how passionate us kiwis are about our home country and anything that comes from it (e.g. Marmite ;D). I can almost taste the fish and chips, smell the ocean breeze, feel the green grass on my feet, and relish in the serenity that only NZ seems to perspire. Like me, I'm sure many of the people in this competition found themselves stuck somewhere else even though their hearts only wish to be in NZ, and it brings a tear to my eye to remember my own situation. My husband always says "life happens when you are busy making plans" - how true that is.

I came to the USA for job training. It was only supposed to be for 9 months. Then the NZ job fell through, I was offered a US one, I met a Texas man whose jigsaw piece fit part of my hearts puzzle, and the rest is now history. So, I left New Zealand just after my birthday in March 2006 expecting to come back in a few months to those faces that I adored, and life just swept me up and changed everything.

I don't think a day goes by without thinking about my NZ friends and family, no matter how busy I would get with the 60 hour work weeks, or now, taking care of Jacob. Distraction is only temporary. So, while there are so many deserving kiwis that I am 'competing' against, know that it would make my heart sing, my eyes weep, and my soul soar to know that I was going to visit home again this year. To have my NZ family plant a little kiwi tree in the hearts of my husband and 4 month old son so one day, hopefully very soon, we will find ourselves packing up our US belongings and finally coming back home to New Zealand for good.

Please help send us home.

Marmite needs a suitcase! Behind-the-scenes creation

I realized that if we were to be one of the lucky 100, that Marmite would need his own suitcase to check in at LAX. So, here I am, creating a masterpiece...a fine Louis Marmitton made from a rice box, magazine paper, black vivid, felts, scissors, and tape (check out the miniature NZ flag that I was working on....you can hardly see it!)

Jacob's first cold...Marmite will help!

It is 1:02am and I just finished nursing Jacob. He is having trouble breathing right now because he is just so stuffed up and, of course, he detests saline nose drops and the suction bulb!!! I wish he'd realize he feels better after we've cleared his nose and be okay with the procedure...how can a 3.5 month old understand that? I have a humidifier in his room helping with air moisture and I'll pick up some eucalyptus oil to put on a tissue (to place close to the crib) tomorrow.

So, with lots of Jacob love and cuddles, extra Marmite (vitamin B's) and orange juice (vitamin C) in MY diet (mega milk!), I hope he'll be back to 100% quickly. If anyone else has other ideas, please let me know!

Jacob saying thank you to Marmite - two of the only ways he knows how

100% unedited, 100% Jacob (we promise!). Being only 3 months old, there are only three ways Jacob can really communicate - crying, cooing, and farting. Since cooing and farting usually means he is happy (as any Kiwi bloke could attest to), I know he is expressing his heartfelt thank yous to Marmite and all the people who have been voting for us...so THANK YOU VERY MUCH! (P.S. turn up the volume or just listen carefully)

Checking out flight prices

I checked Kayak last night for flights back to NZ...they are still expensive. I'm hoping that AirNZ has some super duper deal (i.e. $780 return flights) again so we can take advantage. I wonder how it works with a baby...do they still need their own seat? I know we'd need one of those fold down bassinet trays at the front of the aisle. I guess we'll find out one of these days. Fingers crossed!

Coming back home to visit

Kory and I were discussing the idea of visiting NZ later on this year when Jacob is ~5 months. We hear that traveling at this age is fairly safe/straight-forward and I really don't know when we'll get another good opportunity since I'll be back at work again in January with no vacation (part-time work means absolutely no benefits i.e. no sick leave, vacation, retirement etc.)...it would be great if we could at least get one ticket free through this Marmite competition.

Please vote to help us get home with our new little boy.
