Pippa 'Walker' Scheele - Winner !
My reason for being an ex-pat...
This is the person that I love more than anyone else on this planet, and he also happens to be one of the main reasons why I no longer live in NZ. I never in a million years thought that I would love an American, let alone marry one, and now I cannot imagine my life any other way. This being last day of the Marmite comp I have very mixed emotions. I have had an absolute blast meeting some amazing people (that I hope to meet in person) and yet feel more homesick than ever before. If I don't get the opportunity to win a Marmite trip home, I may just have to suck it up and get on a plane anyway. I have already started dreaming/planning on what I would do if I was in NZ at Christmas, and know my mum and Erin definitely have too. It was really hard on my family (esp my mum) sending me off to America with no return date planned, yet they have been the most amazing supporters and have never faulted in their encouragement and love. So... HAPPY BIRTHDAY Marmite, thank you so much for this competition. I know that every time someone close to me thinks about Marmite this competition will always pop into their head. I will wear your t-shirt proud over here, but I would also love to wear it on the plane HOME. Lots and lots of love, Pippa
Some of my support crew...
With being in the last couple of day of this competition I wanted to take the time to thank my AMAZING support crew. I wanted to show off some of my top supporters from FB. They are the ones that have put me where I am in this comp and IF I get sent home, the will be the ones I have to thank for it. So a BIG thank you to you all for voting and putting up with my endless Marmite posts.

Good luck with the outcome of the competition. Leah Swan's birthday is tomorrow if you have time to throw her a birthday wish. Bon Voyage.

What I'm dreaming of.
This was the last time that I saw my home. The hope of being able to get back here is what will keep me going till the last day of this comp. I LOVE this house. My Dad built this house for us when I was ~10yrs old and I have so SO many fond memories of growing up here. It honestly was everything a kid could have asked for in a home. From adventures to the pond with Erin and Alicia, midnight swims in the pool and teaching Rob to play back-yard cricket. The list really could go on-and-on. This photo was when the side yard was set up for our NZ wedding reception in December 2008. Marmy, if you send me home, we may just throw you a party here :)

I want to give a HUGE shout out to Bronny, my co-pilot and friend through this whole comp. She put this vid together of us which I think is just the bees-knees. So make sure you go and give her a vote after clicking one for me! She is a sweet chick and it would be super rad to be on that plane with her.

Portland family
I know I have talked a lot about how much I miss home and everything about home (which I don't think will ever change). However, I thought I should tell you how much I really do love life in the States. Sure, it rains 300 days out of the year in Portland, and people eat the weirdest food over here, but it is also where my love grew up and where his family is. It isn't that I love the location, but I do love being able to get to know Rob's family and friends that have become my family.
When I first moved out here, I was a little kiwi gal that managed to fit her whole life into two 40kg bags and knew no-one but my then boyfriend. I hadn't been accepted or even gotten an interview to the school I wanted to attend, however this didn't stop the strong willed little kiwi. I attended a community college (which is much like a Polytech) and took some basic classes just so I could stay in the country while I waited for an interview (which I did end up getting!!). During these couple of months my husbands family took me under their wing and treated me extraordinarily. They went to specialty stores (World Market) to find me comforts of home like Cadbury chocolate, Lady Grey tea, scones, and even glorious MARMITE. It was so sweet of them I didn't have the heart to tell them there was a difference between UK and NZ Marmite :)
They have taken such an interest in all things NZ. Every time something happens in NZ, I am guaranteed that my Grandpa Jerry will hear about it first and call me a soon as he can to see if I knew anyone involved or if I have been to that particular location.
They also are intrigued by NZ food and love to give our recipes a go. A couple of examples of this include, last Christmas, which was my first away from NZ. Uncle Ron went to all this trouble to secretly find out a favourite kiwi dish of mine to make me so that I felt "at home". Last Thanksgiving I was made a special kumura dish by Mumma-Geri so I didn't have to eat the candied yams. On my birthday Tiff made a whole meal dedicated to NZ foods! The list honestly goes on and on.
I also would never have guessed that this little kiwi would meet such amazing Americans that have made my life so much more spectacular. From the ladies at school that put up with cranky studying Pippa, to the friends that I feel incomplete if I don't see them at least 3 times a week. I love you all!!
You see Marmy, as much as it makes my heart ache to be away from my family in NZ, the people I have met over here have helped me through rough patches and helped me celebrate some amazing feats.
I love my life in the states, but NZ will always be my "home" and Marmite, this little kiwi NEEDS her dose of home. The rain has set in for the next 8 months and I am pretty sure I am already feeling its effects. A break to NZ will be all that I need to recharge my batteries.
PLEASE SEND ME HOME MARMY!!

Marmy (my nickname for ya!). So you see I would REALLY love to be home for my parge's b-day this year. You see it is a rather big one this year, a milestone some may say. I have missed the last couple of birthday's however I do believe it is fate as the flight home coincides perfectly with the celebrations. Dad is an avid pilot and so this post is for him. Love you Parge! Hope Marmite lets me give you a b-day cuddle.

I got SUPER hungry, lucky I always keep Marmite close by to curb the hunger pains.
This was our favourite part of walking around the mount
Rob thought this guy was cool, his name is Tangaroa (Maori god of the sea). He hangs out at the entrance to the Mt Maunganui harbour. He faces the entrance to the harbour, crouching with his Taiaha (spear), challenging visitors as they enter the harbour, to ensure their intentions are friendly, and to bid visitors a safe journey on their way out of the harbour. I'm pretty sure he would love to see me enter the harbour :)

My First Pharmacy Degree
This was my BPharm graduation in 2007 from Otago. I am now 8 months away from graduating my 2nd degree in pharmacy, a Doctorate in Pharmacy. May 21st 2011 cannot come soon enough!! You see the program I am in is supposed to be 4 years, however I am completing it in 3. Needless to say this means I haven't had a break since I started in 2008. It is absolutely exhausting, and my life is consumed by study. As of now I am currently interning for 12 months at various pharmacy locations, basically I am working for free, CORRECTION: I am paying $40,000/year to work :) Needless to say, I am incredibly in debt from this PharmD, and have been working my behind off for 2 years with no trip home to NZ. Please Marmite, give me a graduation gift and send me home for a break!!!

But then again everything is bigger in the states :) There are a tonne of doctoral candidates on here, must mean that we all have no money to afford to go home aye! haha. Best of luck Lisa and Kim finishing your programs also!!! Cousin Leisel, I miss you too dear!!! Cant wait to see you in December (the power of positive thinking). haha.

Hehe! I did the same in Peru.. I waved to my parents across the Pacific Ocean, then text them to tell them to wave back. I'm sure all the locals thought I was weird waving at the sea! Hope to see you enjoying the white sand on the Mount beach this summer :)

Very cute pippa! I dont think marmite will make you swim! LOL

I miss beaches with shells on them
The beaches here are just sand, and I miss being able to find shell rings, pipi's, and most of all lady slippers!!
Micah's photoshoot!
Micah (only a couple of months old) already has strong opinions about his Aunty being there for Christmas this year.

This is so cute Pip. Miss you so much. Please Marmite send her home.

Typical date-night
When Rob and I lived in NZ it was a frequent occurrence that we would go grab some fish & chips and spend hours on the Mount beach. All I want was the $10 special and some L&P. PLEASE MARMITE!!!
28 September 10 at 7:15am
Is that a can of L&P I spy in the background?
Report this comment28 September 10 at 5:48pm
It sure is :) Cant have fish and chips without L&P!!!

Yum an ice cream from the dairy would be awesome - I'd go with orange choc chip! I love the icecreams from Copenhagen cones too. Keep up the good work!

Haven't seen one of these in 2 years!!!
I'm pretty sure it makes me less of a kiwi to not have seen a sheep in that long. Make me a complete kiwi again and let me chase these guys all over the Mount!
26 September 10 at 11:21pm
That's a long time not to see a sheep!! I saw plenty in Scotland... but they aren't NZ sheep so it's not the same. Best of luck getting home!

Yes and these are a very special type, the crazy ones that roam the Mount! Same to you kim :)

Meet my....
Marge/mumsie/mummy darling, who also happens to be my best friend. This lady is one of the most important people in my life and I love her so much it actually hurts sometimes. Last night I was able to chat to her for about 5 min (she is a very busy lady!) but the first thing she said to me was "I could really do with a hug from you". It has been 2 years since I have hugged my mum Marmite!!! We have a really close relationship and even tho time zones, my Doctoral program, and her re-licensing to be a RN, means we cannot always talk when we would like or for as long as we would like. However, we really do treasure the times we can. Please send me home in December Marmite to hug my mum and treasure some moments with her.

I had a kiwi friend come over yesterday to London for for a visit, and he bought me some treats - including MARMITE!!!! Guess what i had for brekkie?! Marmite on Ryvita crackers combined with a bit of butter to add that creamyness. YUMMO!!!! x

My new favourite...
Smoked cheese fondue and Marmite. I was trying to decide which went first, the Marmite or the fondue!

Mmmm Marmite and smoked cheese sounds delicious!! Looks like a yummy drink there too hehe! Thanks for your lovely comments Pippa, best of luck with the comp although I'm sure you don't need it - I am so jealous of your amazing support!!

ooh yes that was a Blackberry lemon drop! It was at this fun place called Bartini which sells all different and amazing types of martini's. Aww thank you I do have some pretty amazing friends and family. However, I still think I need all the luck I can get, votes are only a teeny part of the comp :)

Coffee
Admittedly I am a full blown coffee addict, I think it comes with the territory of doing a Doctoral program!! This being said nothings compares to the amazing taste of a NZ trim flat white. I know, I didn't believe it when people visiting NZ raved about our coffee, but you don't know a good things till its gone right!? I have had to make adjustments (obviously I cant just stop drinking coffee) and have resorted to getting an "americano" with "room". This basically means you add hot water to espresso and then add 2% milk to it. Voila the closest thing to a flat white I can find! I would really love to have a good cuppa on the strand with my mum Marmite!!
24 September 10 at 7:54pm
Great posts Pippa.Marmite needs to bring you home.Keep up the good work.

Hey Pippa - Starbucks in the UK now have "Flat White" on their offerings - probably got sick 'n tired of being asked for it. Costa also do it. Nothing tastes better. Start a campaign to go "Flat White" in the US. They could also sell Marmite on toast as pert of their breakfast menu.
Report this comment25 September 10 at 3:42am
No way really?! That is so awesome. Maybe I just need to keep bugging them for it. I never knew that a flat white was such a lucrative drink! Oh that would be that day when I can get a flat white and a marmite sammie from the local starbucks :)

Even the pests are uglier over here!!
I didn't understand why American's loved our possum's........until I saw their opossum!!
24 September 10 at 6:39am
I agree! Over here everything wants to kill you! There's mosquitoes that give you West Nile Virus, bats that have rabies, wolves, mountain lions, bears. Then there's ticks that eat into your skin, a huge number of spiders that can kill you - and then there's the Americans themselves! LOL I so much miss NZ and it's safe and wonderful wildlife.
Report this comment24 September 10 at 4:27pm
Haha totally. I was telling someone the worst you can get in NZ is a wild boar or shark other than that we have nothing that can really hurt you!!

Oh.....Pyes Pa
Isn't this place beautiful! I grew up here and would love to be able to go back and see these beautiful green rolling hills.

This is our fav spot on the back road from Rotorua to Tauranga. Awesome view ... and just down the road a little further are some road-side stalls to get some NZ-made fruit & veges etc. Good luck Pippa!
Report this comment25 September 10 at 3:40am
Yeah!!! We take that route all the time and I know those stalls very well. Its a typical case of mum gazing out the window then yelling "stop" and dad wizzes on by saying "I needed more warning". Haha. We live about 1km up Pyes Pa Rd it was truly an amazing place to grow up!

Taking Marmite to America
Went to lunch at Olive Garden with my friend Ash, and as the basket of fresh, delicious bread sticks came out I immediately thought Marmite would go perfectly with these!! I tried to be subtle, but a huge red jar of black stuff is not easy to hide. After getting strange looks from the majority of the patrons in this high class Italian restaurant, the server finally asked what I was doing which induced a good 10min of laughing. Poor gal. Lesson learned: Take a smaller jar of Marmite :)
Love my All Blacks
I thought this video was gold and have watched it about 15 times already, missing the kiwi humor a tonne. Marmite, I would REALLY love to watch a decent rugby game so please send me home.

I love this vid....pure talent! Can't believe some people are crying fake?! Ba humbug. I still haven't worked out how to upload vids to my entry yet but if you haven't seen it, check out the Air NZ inflight safety video...it's just gold Pippa!

Uploading vids is fairly easy, mov works well but I think it just takes some time to upload :( Wish we could post things on each others walls cause I would totally love to help you out and post a vid for ya. I love their safety vid, so funny. I should post that one too :)

Kim!! I was wondering if our paths would have ever crossed living so close to each other and your last name always struck me as familar and then I realized your TONY's sister!!! I knew him back when he was at TBC, he was a year a head of me, however there was a big group of us always hanging out. How funny. Anyway wishing all the best with the comp dear, if you, Bron, and I all get home....Marmite party?

Portland International Airport
As I dropped my wonderful husband off here tonight for yet another business trip, I could help but start dreaming of walking through those doors and on to a plane to NZ, I may have started hallucinating, I am not sure....
Football season
My weekends are slowly being more and more filled with football esp our team the USC Trojans. It just so happens they have the same colouring as Marmite.......coincidence? I think not :)
