Eloise Veber - Winner !
GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!
If I don't get a chance to make another post, good luck everyone....i think that if you really really want this, you can get it! I hope this for everyone! It's been really fun doing it. I haven't really visualised being home in so long, and this has made me remember all sorts of places and smells that seemed too far away in my memory to recall before this.
Thanks Marmite! kia kaha to all..... much arohaxx

Marmite saves lives!
A few months ago I was lost in Berlin with not much morale... no job because I couldn't speak german, and no money to go anywhere else.... so I stayed put to see what life would throw at me. Whats the next best thing to seeing your parents.... your friend's parents! The Brandons visited Berlin and my only request was a jar of Marmite. I was actually looking forward so much to this marmite.... as a vegetarian you can start to feel a bit sad if you don't get all your vitamins and minerals. This marmite was going to save my life (life can be very simple when you don't have a lot of money). This was before I had heard about the competition at all. It was at this very lunch that we all decided that I should enter the competition. So Marmite saved my life in more ways than one. Without this competition I would have been really confused about how to earn enough money to get home - which is where i wanted to be after an exhausting 2 years of backpacking. It gave me aim and structure when I needed it.... thanks Marmite!

It was such fun catching up with you Eloise, glad the wee jar of Marmite kept you going a bit longer!!! We had such a lovely time having lunch with you - just a shame the restaurant didn't serve Marmite, but of course, we had our own!!!! It just shows you that three heads are better than one and we are so glad you decided to go with the idea of entering the competition - Sanitarium should be so impressed with your Web contributions - so colourful and cool!!! Good luck, we are waiting to hear the results with fingers and toes crossed!! xx

VEGETARIAN NIGHTMARE!!!
Ok so I know the french are famous for their cuisine, but it really isn't very flexible. A number of times I was invited for dinner and then offered, instead of the main meal; plain rice, or sometimes just plain lettuce! There seems to be meat in everything. There is bacon bits in salads, stock in the vegetable soup... I realise the same could be said about NZ and probably most countries apart from India. It's hard though, when you are travelling and eating a lot at other peoples houses. My diet became repetitive and limited..... fried eggs, bread, cheese and lettuce. See this typical french recipe for a Vegetable Potage (soup) with beef stock!
6 cups water
1 tbsp beef bouillon
1/2 C brown rice
olive oil
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 C sliced leek
1 C sliced fresh carrot
1 C sliced celery
2 C sliced fresh mushrooms
1 tsp herbes de Provence
1/2 tsp black pepper
Of course, Marmite is a great stock for soups like this... so I quickly began offering to cook and slipping some marmite in instead of Beef bouillon to make it vegetarian ;)

'CONTINENTAL BREAKFAST'
We grow up with the term, and to me it means 'just toast' (without eggs, bacon and all the rest...). But suddenly I found myself in the origin of this simple meal...Continental Europe. I ended up staying a year in France, living in families and homestays. This means..... lots of bread and jam. I've never been a big fan of jam... i'm not much of a sweet-tooth... i definately prefer salty! So I emailed mum..... I need a big jar of MARMITE!!! It got me through a very cold winter in the Alps and travelled with me all around France.
THE OLDEST CITY
I went to Byblos, and decided to eat fish for some protein. I sat at this beautiful fishing town setting, and picked my own fresh fish from the table. No two fish were the same, there was so much choice! Not everything in the Med has been fished to oblivion........unbelievably.
BEIRUT
There is a trend for unhealthy fast food in Beirut, yummy kebabs are being pushed aside by burgers and fries, and you can always expect a lot of mayonnaise and ketchup.... There are lovely surprises though, these yummy mangoes below....
CITY = ABUNDANCE
We made it back to Damascus, and were relieved by the availability of more healthy food. At this coffee house we were given a free bowl of fruit!
FLAT BREAD EVERYWHERE
So this became a pattern, everywhere we were given piles of this flat bread at the end of the day.....
ROUGHING IT
Here is the castle we stayed at. We expected some kind of shop but there wasnt one... the restaurant gave us the leftover bread from that day... free bread! Marmite on toast for breakfast!
DESERT SURVIVAL
Chilling with fishermen at a faraway lake... we got offered many coffees, and found that its only actually a lucky few that can afford the meat that you see everywhere. There are many people that eat kebabs with just salad in because the meat is so expensive. Here we had flat bread and hard boiled eggs for protein. Unfortunately backpacking can be very exhausting, so just at the point when there isnt much to eat, you can find yourself very tired and hungry compared to local people who have a home to go to. Marmite got me through...
THE FIRST OF THE CARNIVOROUS LANDS
In Syria, basically they are obsessed with chicken. Second on the menu is all other meat products, including camel's meat, so I found myself surrounded by slaughtered animals..... (see the camel's head below...!)
HELLO B12, I LOVE YOU
It wasn't long before I realised that it is because I'm vegetarian that I have these cravings for Marmite. We've all heard the idea that we crave things that our body needs...I must really need to keep up my B12 vitamins.....! Yum look at that silky vitamin goodness!
ON THE GO
There were many cracker lunches, mini sandwiches etc. Here I wanted to try the local feta so I didnt use marmite... i thought it would make the 'cracker sandwich' too salty, but I found out its not as yummy, and not as healthy!
TRAIN EATING
As soon as you leave the comfort and resources of a busy city like Istanbul, and board trains and buses, eating is always tricky. We had many picnics with marmite and cheese on crackers....
