Chuck that video on, if you would be ever so kind, and pop back here with that song as the soundtrack and try to imagine this:

You jump on a plane, you've packed your things. You've said your farewells to friends from your adopted home and you're on your way. You travel a long way. Thousands of miles to get to those that you love at home. Friends, family, random folk that you don't realise you miss until you get back. Like that strange man from the local dairy that gives you free lollies. He's pretty choice.

You finally touch down. The airplane food hasn't gotten to you. Yet. You're in Auckland Airport, you see familiar logos, sights, brands.
Accents. "Flight sux siven two has now arrived"

You're going through customs. Almost home. Almost out into the daylight of New Zealand. You get your bags, walk up to the arrival doors and bust your way through. There, right in front of you, are your family. The people you love the most in this world who you've been apart from for a long time. They're right there. So close.

You exchange nervous smiles, and run with excited screams to embrace. A warm hug from Mum. Giddy jumps and euphoric chatting from siblings. An overwhelming sense of content:

You are home.

Haere mai. Welcome home.

This is Libby, signing out. It's been epic. I hope everyone at some stage can get home. Best wishes to everyone, good luck, and thank you.

Lib

What Happens When you Aren't Allowed Any Marmite on Telly

I found out from a little bird that a report for TVNZ's Breakfast show was being filmed in Glasgow and emailed TVNZ to see if I could do the Marmite 'I-got-500-votes' run on live TV. They didn't email back, so my good friend Tracey Williams and I went down to George Square in Central Glasgow to check stuff out with a cardboard Marmite jar hoping to get it on TV. The Kiwi TV crew weren't keen but said that we could go on TV and say hi instead.

Tracey had her bagpipes and I mentioned that I had my drum in the office to which they then asked if I could run and get it and play on the live cross. So I ran and got it, got drenched along the way (hence the drowned rat look) and then we got on TV!

As much as I didn't get any Marmite lovin' on the telly box, I have a behind the scenes sneaky video that I'll post here.

Feel free to check myself and Tracey and the lovely Tamati out here:

http://tvnz.co.nz/breakfast-news/glasgow-tamati-14-10-video-3859286

(Scroll to 4.30 for some freezing cold drumming fun...)

Christmas 2006

Yes, this is for real. I spent Christmas Day 2006 in China where we were treated like celebrities... as you can see from our adoring fans here. It was a band trip to play at a theme park over Christmas and New Years and we had a great time. So there you go. Four Christmases away from family at home. I hope it's not going to be number five this year! Fingers crossed.

Christmas 2008

Christmas two years ago was spent at my home at the time in Perth, Western Australia. I'm about to tuck into some not-so-traditional Christmas fare here with my old flatmate Odelia. Christmas 2009

This photo was taken on Christmas Day last year on the Isle of Mull here in Scotland. I was very fortunate to spend and amazing Christmas with the wonderful MacKinnon family (my Scottish family) but it sure was cold. The Big 500!

We made it! Thanks to EVERYONE for their votes.

So, I'm going to try and get this Marmite run done this week so I can post videos and photos for everyone who has voted to see.

I've been told that I can't be properly naked (and no one wants to see a Kiwi who's pasty from too much time in Scotland in the nuddy) so I'm thinking of covering everything in Marmite and then sporting a cardboard Marmite suit to cover my torso and what not. I hope no one thinks that's cheating.

If anyone has any ideas for the 'Nudie' Marmite Run through George Square in Glasgow, please let me know!

Cheers again!

Hungover in Glasgow

Hi everyone!

Thanks for your support and wishes for the champs yesterday. It was a great day and I played well so was really happy! (I don't have any videos of me playing but in case people are confused as to the type of drumming I do, here is a video from the World Pipe Band Championships earlier this year. - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eDXc0FwI8ig)

I'm super hungover though. Naughty! I have been dozing and dreaming of Marmite and all things Kiwi whilst having a lazy day.

Also, we're into the last week of the mighty Marmite Marathon competition which is quite exciting but sad at the same time. I'll have to find a new website 'addiction' once this is all over.

I hope everyone had a great weekend!

Help Me Marmite! Help Help Me Marmite!

Hello to the crew at Marmite HQ, you good things you! (I had originally thought to write this whole thing as a poem but at 10.30 on a Sunday night my brain isn't really in gear. See below...)

Could you pretty please give me some pointers so I can perhaps become one of your favs for a little bit. I've promised to cover myself from head to toe in Marmite and traipse around Central Glasgow if I get 500 votes and surely this will be a super awesome marketing stunt for you guys. Only problem is I guess your target audience isn't really in Scotland... Hrrmmm... Still, any publicity is good publicity!

I've also shamed myself with idiotic dance moves and crazy voices. Perhaps I need to be doing more to impress you. I'll put my thinking cap on.

I've got the World Solo Drumming champs this coming weekend so my brain isn't really switched on to the most creative things at the moment. More musical things really. At least, that's my excuse. Plus I stubbed my toe really bad and it's a bit sore which is averting my attention somewhat.

So please if you have any pointers, I'd love to hear them!

Love, Lib x

Attention Marmite's Favs!

Hi to Some of Marmite's Favs.

I used to be one of those kids in high school. You know the ones, the sort of sad, sit in the corner, hang out in the library at lunch time sorts. I wasn't popular or anything. I never really did learn how to become one of the cool kids. I had chatter-rings, cargo pants, Barkers and Pro Yos but I was never super cool.

So, I was hoping that some of the cool kids could please share with me how to become one of Mr Marmite's favs. Perhaps some hints or tips? Do I need to buy stirrup pants? Maybe get a new hair cut? Should I buy Mr Marmite an apple and suck up to him to be the Teacher's Pet?

Please let me know if you have any tips or perhaps how I can charm Mr Marmite into lifting me into your select group, if only for a day? I'm hoping to get 500 votes remember.... read a couple of posts below to see why!

Love and hugs and thanks in advance,

Libby x

Dear everyone, Libby O'Brien needs to go home. Asap. Her Vitamin D levels are at critically low levels, and she can no longer maintain her Lyn of Tawa accent. Or her Billy T James accent. New Zealand NEEDS her party spirit because summer is fast approaching. Libby is 100% Aotearoa and epitomises all the real good stuff about our homeland. She's funny and friendly and clever and smiley and talented and dedicated and NZ can't do without her any longer. She has run out of Watties, Toffee Pops and Summer Ale, not to mention MARMITE, and these companies are suffering slumps in profit as a result of her having been away sooooo long. PLEASE VOTE NOW FOR OUR LIBBY TO SAVE HER AND AOTEAROA!!!!!!!!! Cheers, Trace (Libby's Surrogate Big Sister)

Kirsty Gets Creative

My lovely wonderful very good friend Kirsty MacKinnon was asking me recently who the most famous New Zealander was and of course I replied "Marmite!" However, she really wanted someone who had a 'face' and because of our mutual love of rugby, she thought that Jonah Lomu could take the title. Check out this link of a little something she made for me to put on this site: http://sendables.jibjab.com/view/yf8sTDF5D185Dsq1 THANKS KIRSTY!

Billy Connelly Knows What's What

If you need to listen to anyone then it's the Big Yin! I met Billy a little while back when he found out that I was trying to get home and thought he would pay me a visit to help my cause... Ok no that's a lie. Billy is a big fan of Slanj Kilts where I work in Glasgow and he came in one day to say hello to everyone one morning late last year. Still, as much as he didn't say anything, I could tell that he was thinking that I really did need to get home soon!

"What's For Ye, Won't Go By Ye."

"What's For Ye, Won't Go By Ye."

This is one of the best things that I have learnt since being in Scotland. Basically, it just means that if something good is going to happen for you, it won't pass by you. If it's meant to be it will be. I completely love this little saying and hope that all of us competing in this great Marmite competition can remember that and hopefully, if we're meant to go home in December, we will get a chance to. If by some chance we miss out, no worries mate! There's probably a good reason why and no doubt something good might happen in the corners of the globe where we all are. (Unless you're like me and you get deported because your Visa is about to run out!)

Maybe that's silly thinking but I reckon it's a good thing to keep in mind.

Good luck to everyone who is spending large chunks of their day on this website hoping to get home! And remember, what's for ye, won't go by ye!

The Things I Will Do to Get Home...

Ok everyone. I have an announcement to make.

I've decided to up the ante, as they say. Here's the dealio:

I would like to get a few more votes on the board. I know they aren't the most important thing for this competition but they definitely all help. So, I have decided that if I reach 500 votes by the end of this competition (31st October) I will cover myself from head to toe in Marmite, wear a large cardboard Marmite jar to cover, well, myself, and will walk through Glasgow's George Square wearing only Marmite and some cardboard.

Bear in mind that this will be in the middle of winter...

So tell your friends, your family, your workmates and band mates and you never know, you might see me really becoming one with my favourite bit of Kiwiana!

World Solo Drumming Championships

As some of you may know, I moved to Scotland at the start of 2009 as a personal development exercise to play in and compete with one of the best pipe bands in the world - The Vale of Atholl Pipe Band. The Vale, as the band is affectionately known, is based in Perth, Scotland which is a 120 mile round trip from Glasgow and at some points during the pipe band season I was travelling to Perth four times a week! It sure was a busy summer of pipe banding but I loved every moment of it. I competed with the band at five major championships, including the World Pipe Band Champs which attracted an audience of 55,000 people to the event and was broadcast live around the world by the BBC.

Now that the season is over, I have been concentrating on the World Solo Drumming Championships which are set to take place here in Glasgow on the 23rd of October. I competed last year (and I believe was the only entrant representing the Southern Hemisphere) and am hoping to better my placing from 2009.

Like any sport or hobby when competing at any world championships level, it takes a lot of time management and personal commitment to stay on top of your game and of course, it's always that little bit tougher when you're a long way away from home!

However, I'm very proud of my achievements so far and hope that I will be able to pass on some of the skills I have learnt to kids who are learning drums back in New Zealand if I am able to get home soon. I sure have some fun stories to tell them as well which will hopefully inspire them to want to travel to the other side of the world to try and be the best they can be.

I can't wait for the competition and I'll keep everyone updated how the practice is coming along and how it goes on the Big Day next week!

Lib Lib Can Jump

Before I moved to Scotland in 2009, I was in Glasgow in 2008 for the World Pipe Band Championships and came across this beauty of a shop. At the time I wanted to get a photo with it for obvious reasons but wanted to make the photo a little different. So I jumped. The rest, as they say is history. Before I moved over to the UK, Mum and I were watching the sun go down over the Pacific Ocean one night and we had this brain wave. - Why don't I try and get as many jumping photos in front of as many World famous land marks as possible. And The Lib Lib's Jumping Project was born. Soon, I had made it (with a bunch of friends) into Hello! magazine here in the UK for my jumping escapades and I'm still managing to get a few pictures here and there. I Get By With a Little Help From My Friends

So I was sitting on a plane coming back from Portugal today and I thought, surely some of my pals back home and around the world have a few thoughts on why they want me home. So, dear friends, I ask you this: Could you please spare a few moments from your day (especially you students! You know who I'm talking to!) to record a short video, draw a drawing, paint a picture or just take a photo and I will post it up on this site for the world to see and adore. I promise that if I am lucky enough to get home with Marmite's help that I will buy you all Marmite and gifts and presents. (And no doubt some of that magical amber stuff we do enjoy in pint glasses!)

Feel free to embarrass me, I don't mind. I REALLY want to get home!

Marmite and some Ghillie Brogues

Ghillie Brogues', are a type of shoe with laces along the instep and no tongue. Although now primarily worn for social events, Ghillies originated as a shoe that would drain water and dry quickly due to the lack of a tongue, and not get stuck in the mud because the laces were above the ankle. Thanks Wikipedia. Obviously a spread of class, Mr Marmite spent some time with some ghillie brogues at work today.

Best of luck with getting home. Trying to get our boy home from Edinburgh, so will throw some votes your way too.

Thanks Lester! I've been voting for Mark as I like that's he's come over here to train and all that. I know how he feels... sort of! If Mark and I manage to get home we'll have to meet up in NZ and have some Irn Bru and haggis! All the very best and thanks for the votes!

PLEASE HELP ME FACEBOOK BUDDIES!

Hi everyone.

So I'm entering this totally hip and happening competition to get me home. My Mummy misses me and I haven't seen her in almost two years! Argh!

So, please click on this link and I might get a chance to go and visit her and my lovely home of New Zealand. (I also might get to make it to Square Day, the best Pipe Band Competition in the World!)

Thanks!

Why the Heck am I in Glasgow?

It's cold. It's dirty. It's smelly. And they have Neds. Not sure what they are? Check it out on Youtube...

But I digress.

Why am I in Glasgow, Scotland? Basically, I'm here to play drums. Yes that's right. drums. In a pipe band.

And what makes that so special? It's all about this: http://www.bbc.co.uk/music/worlds/2010/bands/robert_wiseman_dairies_vale_of_atholl/

Playing at the World Pipe Band Championships with a Scottish band. Hence staying in Glasgow, playing drums, selling kilts for a living. It sounds random and it is but I love it. However, I have this undeniable hankering to get home for Christmas.

In my desire to become the best that I can be through pipe bands, I have missed four Christmases in a row at home and this will be number five if I can't make it back to beautiful Aotearoa for Chrissy 2010. I've spent a Christmas in China, two in Australia and one here in Scotland. Sure, the white Christmas thing was a novelty but nothing beats sun, strawberries, good Kiwi tunes and a BBQ. So I hope you can all help me to get home for Christmas, see the family, the friends and rekindle my love of gas barbies. (The coal ones over here just don't cut it!)

The first entry.

Well my wee 89 year old Nana called me up and said to me "I have no idea what this internet thing is but apparently you can get on it and get yourself home for Christmas. Do it Lib!"

One must always obey Nana at all times.

So here I am. Showing my love for Marmite and hoping to help all the boys and girls at Marmite celebrate the big 100 in style back in EnZeed. No one in Glasgow really 'gets' this whole Marmite vibe. Must think about changing that...

I'm off to get some video ideas into my head and will upload a cheeky wee video soon.

Stay tuned...

Sure, you may have 100,000 facebook friends to vote for you but it doesn’t necessarily mean you’re on the plane. It’s a quality, then quantity rule round here. We’ll be making our decision based on originality and creativity, how well your entry fits with the values of the Marmite brand, then popularity.
